Lakland 44-01 replacements

OK I love hows this bass plays but not much on the tone. But what really is the culprit? The pups or the pre? Or is it both. I really like how my PV Cirrus sound and I love the EMG DC's in my other basses. What would you all do to make this thing slay?

i'd like to know also, i'd love to get my ibanez with mk1's closer to the sound of my ltd b500 with emgs

That pre sucks. Pickups are ok if bypass.
