lakland 55-01 upgrade battery dies quickly

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

Ive got a lakland 55-01 which i upgraded to a bartolini ntmb with nordstrand pickups, ive noticed the 9 volt battery keeps dieing very quickly, i unplug the jack after use and pull up the knob that kicks it into passive but am still finding that even after say a week of not using it the battery is dead, which i find a bit strange, what do you think is wrong? is it a faulty jack? or a short?

thanks

Faulty or wrongly wired jack.

Thats my guess, somewhere theres something draining the battery all the time.

Sounds like a bad ground, or wires soldered incorrectly at the jack. I had this issue in the past as another friend just mentioned to me recently. Gotta be careful with the ground wires. More grounds is not always good.

The active/passive switch doesn't turn the pre off, it merely bypasses it from the signal path so that won't make any difference. The switching is in the jack, and if the battery is draining that fast, the obvious place to first look is at the jack. Make sure you've got the switching wired correctly AND that the jack isn't shorting anything from sleeve to ground. That'll make the battery be on no matter if there's a plug in the jack or not.

Check to see that the jack is wired properly, and that it hasn't rotated and shorted against any shielding foil or paint.

If the 9v neg is connected to the common ground or ring, that's going to kill your battery fast. It's an easy mistake to make, too.

If the jack is correct, then you should look for accidental grounding contact, as SGD pointed out.
