Lakland 55-02 active controls - explanation please

Sign in to disble this ad
My son is trying to figure out the preamp control settings on the Lakland 55-02. This is with the "first gen" Bartolini pickups and preamp.

Let see if we've got the basic controls identified correctly:

"Bottom three" controls, going from bridge to neck, are bass, mid, treble.

"Top" control is blend pot, bridge == MM, neck = Jazz.

Last control towards neck is push/pull volume, in for active, out for passive.

Bridge (MM) pickup coil tap switch positions are "bridge" coil, both coils, "neck" coil.

Is that all correct?

The weird thing is that the bass eq control seems to max the bass frequencies at the mid "detent" position (where the "click" is). Turning it up past that point actually seem to _cut_ the bass again.

OTOH, the mid and treble seem to work as expected.

Any ideas what might cause this apparent effect?

The other thing is that the active electronics seems to be picking up cell phone interference intermittently. Is this also a known issue?

-Mark

Have no clue, I would email Lakland. Always good to do just to see how responsive they are if nothing else. Don't know if that's a US or import but some of the makers sub out their imports entirely and so may not know anything about the imports. Either way it doesn't flow the way boost cut is working with any pre I've ever had. The detent should be no boost or cut with boost kicking in clockwise and cut counterclockwise (for right hand bass). Tapping on the pups with a pup screw (whatever) is often better than sounding a note to see what's going on with the controls.

I would guess that the bass pot is defective as it is the only control not boosting, but it could be another component in the preamp circuitry. Lakland's service is highly praised and you should get to the bottom of it through them.

I think just about any kind of audio electronics will react to the periodic signalling going on with a cell phone, at least the GSM kind (AT&T/T-Mobile). I've had mine on various amps, on top of table radios. Anything with an audio amp in it. Gets that little "robotic" sound going on briefly.
