Lakland / Bart MM style Humbuckers.... rewire for parallel?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have a Lakland 55-02 with the new Lakkie pickups and electronics. My question is this: can I REWIRE the bridge pickup for series, in the same fashion as the Musicman 5 / Stingray with the toggle in the back position?

Now, I know it wont sound the same due to not having the Stingray's phantom coil , but I think it will get me close enough.....

now, out of the box the controls are standard Pan- Neck / Bridge, but you can select the bridge pickup coils; Neck, Neck & Bridge (series), Bridge. I just want the coils to run parallel.

To my mind this seems like a physical wiring thing, that should be possible....

anyone?

They're just passive pickups with 4 conductors, so yes.

This is a little over my head, but when I had the new Lakland pre installed in my 55/76, I was going to swap out the Seymour for the new Lakland MM. However, I had the Seymour wired exactly in MM style (series/parallel/single). Dan and the guys said that the new Lakland MM pickup could not be wired in series. Not sure why, but they really seemed to spend some time trying to figure it out, and couldn't.

According to the LH-3 Wiring Diagram on the Lakland website, the three positions of the coil switch are single1/parallel/single2. There *is* another way to wire the coil switch so that it does parallel/single/series instead, but the coils have to be fully electrically isolated from each other. If the grounds of the two coils are connected internally inside the pickup as well as externally, then you can't do it. If they aren't, it *should* be possible.

Note: the series connection will be 6 dB louder than the single or parallel options. This can be compensated for with a simple resister network, but the final values of the resistors have to be adjusted empirically by experimentation (math only gets you in the general neighborhood). I may be buying a Lakland 55-02 soon, and have thought about modifying the coil switch to add a series option instead of the middle coil option. If those two things happen, I'll (eventually, someday) post the resistor values here on TB for any other modders.
