Lakland Chisonic pickups - better passive or J-Retro?

Sign in to disble this ad
My new Lakland DJ has Chisonics and a J-Retro pre, which I'm on the fence about. My question is this: does the original passive control plate sound better than the J-Retro in its "passive" (not turned on) mode? Any advice would be appreciated.

J-Retro's passive mode is limited at best. You can only select one pickup or both, there is no blend and, no treble roll-off. There is simply more variation with a passive jazz plate. Better? Worse? That's very subjective, though I am in the process of ditching all my active basses currently.
