Lakland DJ4: anyone tried different pickups?

What did you replace them with and why?
I like the way this bass plays and feels--comfortable neck and light weight.
I'm just not getting the sound I want. I bought it early '06--it has Aero PUs.
I have an old Squier Jazz with Lindy Fralins that has been my primary instrument for the last year and I'd like to have another bass that approaches that same sound, however I suspect that there's more to it than just the pickups.
I use TI Jazz Flats, with low action and a foam mute, and play with light touch.
The Squier/Fralin combo gives a warm and kind of "woody" sound--very even across all strings.
I play mostly old stuff--blues and R&B.
One obvious answer would be to switch out the Fralins in the Squier with the DJ and give it a try (and I might do this eventually), but for me, it would be a big project; and frankly, I'm leery of screwing around too much with the Squier.
I'd be curious to hear more experienced opinions on this.
Thanks. |
