Lakland Glaub but these don't sound like Fralins (Youtube link)

I've played both a US Glaub and Skyline equipped with Fralin pickups. But I don't remember either of them to have that little bit of raspy throaty-ness that this Glaub has in this video clip, especially in the lower notes.

Does this Glaub sound like Fralins to you (maybe my memory has faded). Or would you say he must have something different in there? If so what pickup sounds like this from your experience. I seem to remember Fralins to be punchy but with a smoother, Jamerson-ish finish to them.

Take a listen particularly at about the 3:15 point where he drops to the lower notes.

It's very possible this is the new in-house Lakland P pickup as opposed to the Fralin. Folks who have played Lakland Jazz-style basses before and after the switch from Fralin to in-house pickups have noticed a slight change in overall tonal contour. I'm sure this is probably the case with the new Lakland P-Bass pickups as well. Of course, other factors are what processing was on the bass for this radio broadcast (lots of compression for sure), as well as the settings on the bass itself.

could be a newer model with the lakland PUs, but it is hard to tell from that vid. Who knows what a wierd radio mix like that can do to a bass sound.

Still pretty good tone though.

I'm always amused by people who try to pick out subtle sonic nuances from YouTube clips. No offense, Chip, but there's no way you can hear through the media codec compression, the radio station mixing, and the player's amp and/or effects chain to discern the particular brand of pickups on that bass.

Yes, very true. Lately I read a Youtube posters complaint of how youtube ruins his nicely produced bass tone on all his postings. So I guess why bother with this one.

As far as them being new Lakland pickups. The clip predates the pickup change.

From past experience of playing on the radio live, I seem to remember the engineer usually sending out a fairly unprocessed, clean signal from my bass (I don't pretend to be an engineer). Aside from typical compression for the production. Which I don't think would add the throatiness he has in his tone.

Just thought maybe experienced Fralin users could add one way or another...yes I can get my Fralins to sound like that... OR...No that isn't a tone indicative of my Fralin experience.

Sounds like a Fralin to me. Raised a little high (for more bite), Labella Flats.

Try that.

He's using an Eden Combo in this video. To Be honest, I think that sound your hearing is the Eden preamp run into the Radio Stations console.

Feeling the same way AJ. Wondering why I never heard of this band until now.
