Lakland pickups: difference between Lindy Fralins and Lakland's own P/U?

Sign in to disble this ad
Is there anyone out there who has had the chance to try multiple Laklands and can comment on the difference between the the old Lindy Fralins and new Lakland's own P/U in the jazz-style Lakland basses (Joe Osborne/Daryl Jones)?

By the way, other than the blocks on the neck, is there any difference between the Lakland JO and DJ basses?

And anybody out there tried the new Lakland Decade?

Cheers all!

As far as my memory of the Fralins goes, and it is going, the new Lakland J pick-ups are very similar to the Fralins. I have no Decade experience.

I also read that they used to use Aero's in the Lakland jazz-style basses. Normally I've used Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders and usually play aggressively with a pick, in Pixies-sounding indie rock bands.

Any suggestions or comparisons between the high-output Quarter Pounders vs. the Lakland J-pickups? Is it heresy to replace the carefully chosen pickups in a Lakland?

And anybody have any comments about the quality of a Lakland vs. a Warmoth parts-constructed bass from a good luthier?

Thanks in advance!

I don't think it is. Just keep the originals for a while so you can put them back if you want.

Quality of Lakland and Warmoth bodies is similar, but Lakland necks are WAY better than Warmoth's. For a parts bass USACG necks are a great option.

IMHO Lakland pickups have more puch, more bottom and a bit subdued treble response. Here you can find several sound samples to decide for yourself.

Again IMHO, swamp ash bodied DJ has more bottom than ash bodied JO even with the same pickups.
