Lakland pickups & model imput

I bought a used 2002 Lakland 55-01 last September and it has the weak A string problem I sent it to Lakland and they have been trying different pickup windings but haven’t come up with a 100% fix. I got an E-mail from Dan offering a couple of options:

From Dan:

“Trade your body for a Joe Osborn 5 -string. This has 2 single coil PU's and won't have the problem you are experiencing. I will have some of those in about 3 weeks. The color is Three Tone Sunburst. This is a passive bass.

Trade your body for a 55-01 with a US preamp. This will also solve the problem because the pickup construction is completely different. There is no dead spot. The pickups in this model are Bartolini design that are made in Korea. I think they are great sounding pickups and with the US preamp I think the sound is as refined as our 55-02. You would lose the split able bridge pickup option. I currently have Silver (a discontinued color), Black, and Natural.”

So basically I’ll be sticking my 55-02 neck (maple) on either a Joe Osborn body with passive PU’s or a 55-01 body with two Bart style active soapbars.

I was really happy with the 55-02 sound (except for the A string issue) and loved the B string on the 35’ scale. I also play a 4-string Fender jazz and happy with the sound I get from it.

I’m looking for any thought or insight as to the differences between two.

I must say the Lakland is a class act. Very easy to work with and they are doing this knowing that I bought this used and out of warrantee.

Well I went with the JO5. I got it last Friday. Dan decided to send me a whole new bass instead of reusing my neck. He also put a tort guard on it for no up charge and put a note on the order to select a lighter one if possible. This one weighs in at a hair over 8 lbs, lighter then my Fender Jazz 4. I also went with a maple FB.

She is absolutely gorgeous!

And think, I bought a used (out of warranty) 2002 55-02 at a guitar show and they swapped it out for a new JO5.

Class act all the way.

I wonder, "what would Fender do?"

OHH!! You lucky bum! I've been GASing for a JO5 for a LONG time! The timing/funds thing hasn't worked out yet. Of course I wouldn't wanna trade my 55-94 for one..... I want both, HEHE. So, your 55-02 had bad pups?? You said 55-01 in the first sentence??

Keep us informed on what you think of the sound of the JO5.

Oops..my bad, it was a 55-02.

In talking with Dan Lakin, out of 10,000 made he has only seen 3 with this issue and part of it is in the way I play. It's not too noticeable if the string is plucked up but I'm old school and pluck down with my thumb 70% of the time and the weak sounding A string was quite apparent.
