Question Loose volume knob..

Sign in to disble this ad
i just bought a SX fretless bass from RondoMusic and one of the volume knobs is loose. I have had this problem before on my Ibanez bass, but I was able to remove those knobs and tighten the bolt easily enough. With this SX bass, I cannot remove the knob and I cannot find a thin enough wrench to fit in between the the pickup knob and the bass...

Any suggestions on how to fix this will help. Thanks.

Pry it up using a very small flathead screwdriver. They do come off. I had a few SX's and changed the knobs on all of them.

I did pry it off put I cannot tighten it. When I pull the knob cover off and tighten the bolt, the knob still turns to quickly. What should I do?

I think what he's saying is the pot shaft turns with virtually no effort. Tightening the retainer nut will not help. I've seen this before with cheaper pots; always seems to be the volume. Here's a quick fix: cut a piece of felt to shape, punch a hole in the center, and slide it over the pot shaft. May take a couple of layers depending on the tolerance. Press the knob firmly back on the shaft. This should provide enough friction against the knob to prevent it from turning freely.

I have a similar problem- I have an MIA Jazz that I bought from a friend earlier this summer, and all the knobs have come loose. 2 of them fell off of their own accord, and the remaining knob (neck pup volume/S1 switch) is so loose that it turns without actually turning the pot shaft, so I can't adjust the volume. I've ordered some plain stainless steel knobs from Warmoth since I don't care about the S1 switch, but I can't seem to pry off the knob on the bass to replace it. Is there any trick to getting an S1 switch knob off or am I simply not putting enough force into it?

The MIA jazz knobs have set screws in the little holes in their sides. Tighten them up and the knobs stay on!

As for the original question, try the felt or buy new pots.
