I made a thread about the tone knob on my jazz bass lowering the volume:
Jazz bass tone pot problems

I later found out that my Bridge Pickup wasn't working. I took everything apart, and I noticed the coil wire had a break in it. I'm not some fancy electronic/ pickup maker, so should I buy a new pick up, or what?

Where's the break?:
- outer winding of the coil itselfible), or
- buried winding (inferred using Ohm-meter), or
- output lead

Post photo, if applicable.

You can probably have it repaired. I sent you a PM regarding this.

Fixing this is a delicate, but probably possible operation. What has to be done is to carefully pick the broken wires away from the coil then using an Ohmmeter to the other terminal of the pickup try to find the one broken wire giving continuity through the pickup coil. Once that wire is found a length has to be unwound off the coil and run to the solder terminal so you once again have continuity through the coil. Some turns will be disconnected on the outside of the coil but the effect should be unnoticeable. It's still a delicate operation and if there is epoxy potting on the coil it may not be possible to fix it. Still what have you got to lose? David (SGD) can doubtless point you in the direction of someone willing to give this repair a try.

How attached are you to that pickup? If it was my bass, and I planned on playing it, I would get a replacement pickup and put it in right away, so fixing the other pickup would have no urgency for me. Then you can try to fix it yourself or track down someone to do it for you.

I ripped out the coil and threw it away. It's just a Jazz copy anyhow. I'll put in some MIM pups I found for $20 each.

Sounds like a great excuse to get a really good pick-up... sounds like an older pickup for that to happen... get something that kicks its ass and replace it.

I think I'm gonna put in the extra cash for noiseless pups instead of the MIM. How to the noiseless pups compare to standard MIA pups?
