Marcus Miller pups coming out!

But what to put it? I've got a set of Ultra Jazzes, and a set of QPs on the bench right now. I play rock, and typically never slap or pop. I love the aesthetics of the bass, just not the weak passive tone.

I found a few threads regarding Marcus Millers and Seymour Duncans, but never anything about the results.

Have you? Would you?

Have I? No. Would I? Never. I can only assume that they'd make me sound more like Marcus which is one of the last things I want. The guy is a world class bassist but not on my list of "Who I'd love to emulate."

I'm trying to get this bass to sound LESS like Marcus Miller actually. I like my Jazz basses to sound big and girthy, almost P like. Think Matt Sharp's tone on the first Weezer album.

Put the QP by the bridge and Ultra by the Neck and keep on rocking.

EDIT: Saw your second reply now. Getting a PB sound out of a jazz may require some tinkering with the wiring (the pickups you have are likely okay)and it will still not be the same. An okay solution if you want a more individual sound, but If it's THE PB sound your after consider, you know, trading in your Marcus Miller...

Here's response on another thread (fromDMC Again) to someone who was thinking of using UltraJazzes on a Squier VM JB:

"I actually have ultra jazzes in my fretless Squier.. They sound okay. I could record myself playing with them if you'd like to hear it. I think they're better than the stock pickups. But then, it's been a while since I've heard the stock pickups in that bass. The ultra jazzes seem to have a good bit of bottom end to them. Not so much in the mids.... And A decent amount of treble. So, kind of a scooped sound.

"I'd say it's worth a shot trying them out in that bass though."

I would be interested to hear how they sound.

This was taken from his website when asked about his bass. I was surprised that it is close to stock.

"What modifications have you made to your Jazz Bass?

I have a pre-amp installed in my Jazz - a Bartollini installed by Roger Sadowsky. Roger also installed a Bad-ass bridge.
The rest of the bass is stock."

Big, girthy and P-like sounds like Bartolini 9J1s to me. Haven't played a bass with them that wasn't completely phat sounding.

Wait, the preamp is a Bart? I always heard it was a Sadowsky-designed pre, not just one installed by him.

Really? In my opinion, Marcus has the best tone I have ever heard. Plenty of punch, fat bottom, great for muting, slapping or anything else you want to do. I guess it's just a matter of personal preference. I don't like Weezer so my tastes are obviously different than yours. Get the tone you want and be happy with it.

Oh no doubt. For what he does, and his style of playing, Marcus' tone is par none! That's just not my bag. Matt Sharp and Weezer was just one example.

I have a set of QPs in my VMJ, and they've totally woken that bass up. I suppose whatever I choose, I can always go back if I don't like em.

Could you provide any references? Any well known recordings that use them? I'll go try YouTube.

Thanks!
