matching different SD bassline pups

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Folks,

As part of a mod/custom build on my jazz, im considering using a Bassline SJB-3 1/4 Pounder and a SJB-2 Hot.

Would this be a good combo? And if so, if both volumes are maxed, would you put the hot in the neck or the bridge, or would it make little difference?

I usually use the neck pup a bit more, with the bridge on 25% as well, so wondering which way to use.

Any thoughts???

Cheers

Does the bridge pup tend to create more treble and high mids due to its position?

I'd go with one set or the other just for hum canceling's sake unless you're going with a humbucker or a sidewinder in which case hum canceling is a non-issue.

Hi KO,

would it not hum cancel with both on even if they are different types, as both are single coil and should work that way?

I have never used the QP J pickups, but some guys like them a lot.

I use a pair of STK-J2s (Hot Stack) in a JJ bass with good results. The bass has 500k volume pots and Fender TBX tone control.

I also use SPB-1 and STK-J2 (Hot Stack) in a PJ bass. These 2 pickups seem to balance well volume and tone wise.

They would to a degree, but it'd be more effective if they were the same.

As long as the two pickups have opposite magnetic and electrical polarity, they will hum-cancel. I'm using an SD 1/4 pounder in the neck and a Tesla VR-B4 in the bridge on my jazz bass; before that I was using an SD hot in the neck. I had to get the 1/4 pounder re-magnetized, since it was the same polarity as the Tesla, but now it's dead quiet when they're set at the same volume. I don't know how much more effective you can get than that.

Thats some good info...

Would it be better to put the QP in the bridge with this combo due to it being more bass and treble strong or in the bridge for the same reasons? How do you think it would sound either way either way with all controls on full?

If i hardwire it in series, should I put the QP in the neck area and the Hot at the bridge or the other way round? Or if it is series would it not matter?

Also if either set are used in series should you change the caps and pots? As i have read on here that hot pups in series tend to lose treble? How would this sound using stock electrics?
