Matching Pickups?

Sign in to disble this ad
OK so I get home today from getting ripped off by some store for 'fixing' my bass.

Long story short. my bridge pickup in my MIM Deluxe Jazz is fried.

As you probally know these basses are equipted with 'Noiseless' pups stock.

The guy at the store didn't have much of a reason but he said that a matching set of pups is nescessary...

but I'm doubting this...

can I keep my working Noiseless neck pickup and put in a Basslines or EMG or whatever i want for a replacement bridge pup??

IF your asking if you can use something other than a Fender Noiseless in there the answer is yes. You can put any passive pickup in there and it will work. It won't sound exactly like a noiseless but you probably knew that.

Hand made pickups for any thing you can think of.

I know a lot of people that put in different pups in a passive bass, simply for the tones they get. EMG, Seymour Duncan, etc all have different tones and, if you can balance out the fuzz, you can get a sweet combination from different pickups.

I don't know the characteristics that define them, but there is a distinction between a neck pickup and a bridge pickup. Other than that, "matched pickups" sounds like a snow job unless he's talking about output. Seems like you'd want them fairly compatible that way so you don't have one pickup dominating the other.
