Matching tones on 2 different basses

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an OLP MM2 4 string bass with a Bartolini pick up (passive) that has an amazing sound with all the "thump" and punch that I love...but I also have a Fender Jazz 5 string Delux with active (factory "Noisless") pickups that I play on the same rig and doesnt have near the punch...I want the same punch from the 5 string that I get from the 4, without changing basses and spending alot of $$...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thx!

Sell the Fender and get a 5-string Stingray, OLP, or SUB. These are wildly different instruments, and matching tone is going to be difficult.

If it were easy to match a Stingray's signature sound, we wouldn't be buying Musicman basses. But it isn't easy to get the tone without the genuine article.

I had a similar problem some years ago. I had a pedal board with an A/B switch for my two basses - Fender P/J (with DiMarizos) and a Yamaha fretless with a reverse P pup. However at the amp either the Yamaha's tone was too deep or the Fender's was too toppy. I solved it by putting a Parametric EQ pedal (a graphic would have done) after the Yamaha and before the A/B Switch.

I eventually fixed it completely by changing the pup on the Yamaha to an EMG P/J pair and now I can plug and play without touching the amp settings.

You can favor the bridge pickup a bit on the jazz and get close. But not the same. Completly different pickup locations.
