Unhappy Maybe it's not the low-B. Maybe it's the pickups?

I put the TI low-B back on because I didn't care for the tone of the Sadowsky. What I noticed, is that unplugged, the low-B sounds clear. It's not quite as loud as the other strings given the same picking dynamic, but it's clear. Amplified, it's muddy. And if I up the treble, it doesn't so much get clearer as the other strings get too bright.

My setup is a Jackson AG5 (35" scale) with Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups into a Sansamp BDDI. FWIW, the pole pieces were too wide. At the neck, the B and G go straight over the inner pole pieces. At the bridge, they were barely over the inner pole pieces... so I installed a second neck pickup in the bridge. Now they go over the outer edge of the inner pole pieces, which I think should be fine.

I'm wondering if a bar magnet would be better than pole pieces, since I can't seem to find 5-string pickups with pole pieces that are narrow enough.

Then again, it could be something else.

I have Ultra Jazz 5:s in my Squier and it sounds very even actually. But if the pole pieces don't line up with the strings reasonably, all bets are off I guess.

I got a little improvement bypassing the active electronics, and dialing down the bass, treble, and blend on the Sansamp BDDI (to get more midrange and unaffected tone). But it still sounds much clearer acoustically.

BTW, I'm using flats, not roundwounds.

Pickup height can matter alot on B strings to. Because of the size/mass of the B there can be a bit more magnetic string pull, so lowering the pup can sometimes be a big improvement. Worth a try.
