heres the diagram
Ok. So let me explain. I got a bass in to fix up. A friends. New output jack. Simple enough. Wire it in as seen above....No sound...What the? Hmmf. Whatever. So i flipped the lead and the battery. Sometimes I make mistakes. Nothing. Ok...Wire it back to the way it says and change the battery...Nothing. New cable. New amp...NOTHING! I call the owner. He says the old input jack played. he then unplugged his bass. Put in the new jack and it didnt work. He thought he did it wrong so brought it to me. After all this, I still cant figure the darn thing out! Any other ideas as to what it could be? The only 2 things i noticed, and fixed, were that one of the pickups grounds wasn't connected to the tone pot, so I did that. Also, the wiring diagram says the lead should come from the center volume to the output jack, BUT it was actually wired to come off of leg 3. So the wires on the volume put were backwards...I changed those...no sound. |

Also, i dont think the pickups died randomly. Like I said, he played it, it worked. he took out the output jack and put in the new one. Since then, no sound. I know he didnt change the wires on the volume pot. Maybe I should change them back... |

Maybe I should change them back... | If you try wiring the pickups to the jack with alligator clips while the bass is still wired normally, that's going to cause the preamp to feedback into itself, so that wouldn't be a good idea.
Ideally you would want to go piece by piece until you figure out what's going on, but that does take a lot of resoldering.
Just take the white wire from both pickups and connect it to the tip terminal of the jack.(Remove the connection from the volume pot.) Make sure you're getting sound. That would narrow it down to the preamp.
FWIW, it probably wasn't a good idea that you flipped the battery. |

Aside from the fact that you put the battery in backwards, it's quite rare for active pickups to fail. |

Do you think regular P/J pups would fit in there?
