Meatiest J-bass replacement pickups

Sign in to disble this ad
I almost hate to this, because J pickups have been discussed SO much here....but here goes!

I just purchased a leftover '07 Fender Am. Jazz and want to replace the stock single coils with something that will give me a meaty/burpy tone.

Check out this Earth, Wind & Fire song

And Tom Kennedy's tone on The Chicken.

I know I can't get these tones exactly but that's the neighborhood I want to be in....round/meaty/burpy/muted highs.

From what I can gather trolling TB pickup threads all day Lollars are a good candidate, maybe Nordstrand SE's.

Any other suggestions/recommendations or experiences?

Tom Kennedy's Fodera and pick up placement along with the pre in that bass is what gets that sound. EWF bass player is using a Yamaha. Your J bass will have to be amped and set up to achieve that sound. I replaced my J bass stock pups with Sadowsky J humbuckers (cost $160) and gutted the stock pre and replaced it with a Sadowsky VTC. Nice fat meaty tone, Marcus Miller sounding at times-roll off the tone pot and gets a nice motown sound. Its really a combination of bass and choice of gear EQ.

DiMarzio ultra jazz! Full tone with plenty of cut and a nice smooth treble and no hum. I like to back mine with an OBP-1. SO happy!!!!

Have you considered the Basslines 'Quarter Pound for Jazz Bass SJB-3'? It sounds like it would fit you exactly!

DiMarzio Model J's - big rock phat rock tone. Adds more mids and even more lows.

+1 the ModelJ's, plus a John East R-Retro pre-amp - the parametric mid control allows all manner of burp!
