MEC passives

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Warwick Corvette std with passive MEC's but want to install active pickups. I have played my same bass out of same amp but with the active MEC's and it just sounds so much better. The only problem is that if I just simply order MEC active pickups and electronics it would cost me $550!!! Which I think is insane for pickups. Especially when buying the bass active to passive is only a difference of $300. So nearly double when buying the electronics seperate. I have been thinking maybe EMG JX pickups but I don't know what to do. Any opinion on some great pickups out there that have a great tight low end and crisp clean highs would be great. I play mostly funk/jazz. Thanks!

I bought a set in the TB classifieds and you can always create a WTB thread as well. There's an active set of EMGs listed with a preamp which would be a pretty good deal if you are really looking to go active.

Have you thought about just getting an active system, but keeping the pickups passive? I prefer it that way personally. I like the same kind of tone as you and that's the way I set up all my basses. Active pickups AND system tends to sound too sterile for me. I'd keep the pickups you have, find a good system (probably one here on TB for pretty cheap somewhere) and see how you like it. If you still feel the need, you can always throw some active pickups in as well.

+1

Glockenklang makes wonderful, crystal clear preamps. Audere is popular, as are the Aguilar, Bartolini, and East offerings. It all just depends on what you want in terms of sound - "better" doesn't give us a lot to work with.
