mellow sound pickup?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a custom made jazz bass.
(mahogany body w/ maple top, maple neck and ebony finger board
Lindy fralin Jazz pickup set, hipshot A type bridge. etc...)

Its sound is tight & modern,
The slapping sound is so bright. glassy and punchy but a little insufficient Low-end relatively.

I hope my sound is more mellow and soft plentiful low-ended.(i'm playing fusion jazz or soft pop,)
So. planning change the pickup(lindy fralin) to the other
(Duncan SJB-1, Fender original jazz, Dimarzio DP123)

What do you recommand for my bass?
Tell me about the Character of each pickups.

The hard wood choices are contributing heavily to the natural tone of the bass.

Have you considered spending some time with the EQ on your amp to adjust the tone to your liking?

+1. All that maple, and espeically the ebony board.

If EQ doesn't help some deep toned Barts would do the trick.

Mahogany should be pretty warm, but the maple top might be holding you back. Hard to tell.

I'd also throw in the Kent Armstrong J pickups. They put out the vintage vibe as well.

I find a good amount of the tone comes from the neck. Ebony fingerboards give a bright clacky tone, very different from a maple board. A rosewood board would have sounded warmer, and a mahoghony neck would be even warmer.

I mentioned Barts because they can be overy warm. Vintage jazz pickups are bright.
