Mellowing out an aggressive pickup

Is it possible to make a more aggressive sounding pick up more mellow without replacing the actual pickups?

Have never liked my Carvin soap bars. Have tried Jamerson flats and using the EQ on my SVT head (I never use it otherwise) and I am still not happy with them. The attack is too harsh and because it is a fiver, i tend to play closer to the bridge than normal and that doesn't help the tone either.

Screw them down further from the strings, if they won't go take out the foam, and put in a thinner bit.

if it's a Vintage Modified Jazz, then i can guarantee your pups are too high...drop a couple 16th's of an inch, and see where that puts you. keep dropping them til they mellow out a bit, but drop them too low and you'll get a pretty good volume drop...

good luck

Yes, if it's got 500's now. That would help.

Also, are you aware that on a passive Jazz, the Volumes are really tone controls? It's true. Back them down to around 70% and you'll see what I mean.

No i wasn't aware of that. And yes its got 500K right now,I'll see about switching over to 250k pots and backing off the volume controls.

Yeah, it really makes a big difference to the whole character of the tone. Back 'em down and then volume compensate at the amp. Big change. As soon as you reach the 'suddenly loud' portion of the volume controls, the tone gets a lot more aggressive. Nature of the beast, and quite useful once you get the hang of it.
