messed up wiring/grounding

I'm trying to wire my bass with just a volume and tone, for a single pickup. I wired it using the p bass diagram on the seymour duncan site. On another site I read that I should then connect the outside casing of the two pots with a wire to ground them. When I make this connection, the sound cuts out completely.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I actually had the ground wire that goes to the jack coming from the tone pot.

I moved it, now the sound works.
