Metal pups for Mim Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,

I'm playing a MiM Jazz bass. The beginning of may I'm entering the studio with my thrash metal band to record our first album.
I'm going to be playing my jazz bass through an Ampeg tube amp. But I'm thinking about getting some better/more agressive pickups.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

I don't play metal but I have 1/4 lb's on my JV and I would think they would do just fine . . .

EMG's have a long history of being great sounding pickups with super low-noise which is great for recording. Plus you can add an onboard EQ circuit.

Anything other than MIM stock pickups and DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups will work just fine. Your EQing is what you'll need to really carefully adjust after that. Most likely, upper mid and bass boosts are what you're looking for.

I've been thinking about getting some Seymour Duncans.

A STK-J2 in the bridge and a SJB-3 Quarter Pound for the neck?

Sound like a good idea?

I've been reading some stuff about the STK-J2 and I heard quite a few times that it has a lower volume, is this because of the pickup or were they badly installed?

I put a Seymour Duncan SJ2-B I think it was in an old bass. Lots of midrange which is what you need for metal. Sounds as good as my ESP and Spector.
