Mexi J pickup size q

What year did the mexican jazz bass pickups begin to share the dimensions of the standard usa models? IE; what year did they abandon the same/same dimensions and adopt usa's "universal" convention short/long spec? I'm considering from afar a '98 and a '00 model but have not seen them in person, and consider most see that pickup upgrades to be a no-brainer on these.

ask the owners if the pickups have poles that stick up higher under the middle two strings. that's your "tell" for the improved pickups, which are the right sizes and can thus be easily upgraded.

The made the change with the 2001 model going forward. It's actually pretty easy to spot, The bridge pickup will be a touch longer on the G-string side.

If you go with one that was made prior to 2001, You are either going to have to lengthen the bridge pickup route to accommodate the correct dimension of pickup, or find a pickup set that has the same dimensions as the neck pickup. I did this with 3 different MiM Jazz basses, it was a pain to make the route longer but worth it for the pickups that I wanted to use.
