MFD's vs. EMG active...

Sign in to disble this ad
What are the basic tone differences I could expect from these two pickups? I'm GASSing for a bass and considering a G&L tribbie 2500 or a Schecter Stilletto w active EMG's...thanks for any feedback guys.

Well, they sound nothing alike. The MFD's are huge and strong in the mids. They will cut through almost any mix. The EMG's on the other hand are more full range. They have a more massive low end while adding a clarity you've probably never experienced before. You will plainly be able to hear all the nuances of you playing style, conversely you will also be able to hear your deficiencies and mistakes clearly as well.

I have both and neither is a bad choice, just a different flavor.

Considering the basses they're on, I'd take the G&L Tribute over the Schecter all day long.

I second the G&L recommendation, but I just prefer the sound of my MFDs over my EMGs. Like JMDT said, neither is a bad choice, just a different flavor. In general, MFDs will lean you more toward a vintage sound, and EMGs will sound more crisp and modern.

The EMG's are definitely more aggressive. They seem to be very good for modern styles of music, from my experience. By the way, if the Schecter you're looking at is stock and has EMG-HZ pickups, they're passive. All Stilettos have active electronics though, so you get the best of both worlds. I, personally, like either all-passive or all-active basses, but that's just personal preference
