Question MIA Precision Deluxe - Can pickups be 'upgraded'?

Sign in to disble this ad
The question here is not can it be physically done, but should I, and what improvement can I expect.

My bass is a '97 MIA precision bass deluxe, which apparently has a vintage P and a special humbucker. Do you think it is advisable to throw in a new P pickup, such as the fabled Basslines Quarter Pounder to get a more modern attack.

Favourite style of music:
Marilyn Manson
A Perfect Circle
Tool
Ministry
Nine Inch Nails

P.S - Does anyone know if the special humbucker is vintage too?

Weird, I have a MIA Precision Deluxe from the same year. I bought it used off of craigslist. It came with an active EMG P and an Aguilar OBP-3. Originally I planned on replacing the EMG with some kind of a Fender pickup but as soon as I heard it I knew I was in love. It has the fattest low end I've ever heard. Highly recommend giving it a shot.

I used to be the proud owner of a 2003 American Fender Deluxe Precision. Mine had the 5 bolt neck, a Precision neck pickup and a double J bridge pickup. Is this the bass you are asking about? I was very unhappy with the sound of that double J pickup, but loved the bass otherwise. I can tell you that Rio Grande and Delano both make double J replacement pickups. Does that answer your question or have I misunderstood you? I share your taste in music and would recommend the Delanos with an EMG BQS or BQC control preamp to go along with the pickups. I have a maple fretboard and can nail any Justin Chancellor era Tool tone when I use the right pedals.
