mid heavy P pickup?

Sign in to disble this ad
Whats up fellas. I'm looking for a replacement precision pickup, but I can't seem to find one that has the sound that I like. Right now I'm using a stock squier CV p and the pickup is okay, but I'm looking for something that fits my tastes a little better. The tone I like is super deep, smooth and strong, but still well defined, or as I like to say, "woofy but not muddy."

I'm looking for something that has tons of mids (especially low mids), first and foremost. It would be nice if it had deep, strong bass as well, but as far as treble goes, I hate it. I can always roll the tone knob off if I have to, but I would prefer something that I could play with the tone knob fully open without having a lot of high freqs in it. Also I would prefer something with really high output, kind of like SD QP's. So far I have been looking at some Bartolini 8SU p pickups, but I'm hesitant to go with barts because they usually have a modern, glassy sound to them, and I associate what I'm looking for as more of a vintagey kind of tone (like jamerson without the mute). Whatcha think? Any recommendations?

I just posted on a "Lollar vs. Fralin" thread here. Yesterday I connected a set of Fralins and a set of Lollars. My disclaimer is that my gear for recording was far from high end, and that my bass playing is definitely not high end, but if you want to hear, the link to the recordings is posted below:

I hope these are helpful. Fralins are first.

Aren't precision bass pickups inherently mid heavy to begin with? I've never really had much experience w/ many pbass pickups aside from the SD QP and Fender Original Pbass pickups. IMO the Fender Original pbass pickups are the best pickups i've ever heard tho.

P's are mid heavy compared to J's I guess, but even the stock pickups on brand new MIA P's feel a little "scooped" to me. That pillowy P sound seems to come from a smooth treble sound combined with really full bass. I love the pickup placement on a P, the feel and the look (especially with chrome covers!) but stock pickups never have the window rattling mids that I crave.

On a related note, that clip gidbass linked to with the DiMarzio Model P's has COMPLETELY won me over. Exactly what I want. Thanks you guys, TB never lets me down.

Yep, I used one for awhile. It's exactly what you described.
