MIDS, MIDS, and more MIDS.

I'm looking for the best 5-string J-style pickups that have the entire spectrum of punchy mids, especially growly upper-mid definition. My Carvin's HBN stacked humbuckers are WEAK, and I want replacements that do this thing justice.

Thanks, guys.

Mid Tha-n-g

I have a nice Lakland 5-string (passive) made out of Ash with stong output Lindy Fralin pups. It barely growled and had a "fair" amount of mids. even w/Lindy's. However; when I turned the tone knob down a bit, the mids were going bye-bye. Month's ago, I read a review article in Bass Player mag. about Stellartone tone knob (passive no Batt.) that controlled the treble only and didn't really effect the mids. --unlike a standard tone knob. I took a chance and it is a great, great product that really lets the mids. speak. Now you can hear much more growl and mids, no wonder BP gave it it's Editor's Award. Not sure if Stellartone will give you want you want for upper mids., but I know my Aero pickups on my old Jazz have good power and more upper mids. than my other pups.

Carvin's newer "H50A" stacked humbuckers are nice.

If you want Jazz pickups with a lot of growl and upper-midrange definition, consider Bartolini's "classic bass" series, or SGD's "ND3" Jazz-buckers.

On most Carvin basses, both Jazz pickups (neck and bridge) are actually the same size. Be sure to specify this when you order. For Bartolini, the correct size is "LN" (long neck).
