MIJ Jazz pickup fit?

Sign in to disble this ad
This is my first post. Sorry if this has been addressed, I tried searching and couldn't find any real definitive answer.

I have a mid 90's Jazz bass that I like pretty well, though I wasn't that psyched about the pickups. Someone gave me a set of Mighty Mite Jazz bass pickups, which are hair large and won't fit without expanding the routing in the body. I understand that some (all?) MIJ Jazz basses have slightly different sized components than MIA or even MIM.

Now, I'm not married to the idea of putting those mighty mite pups in, but I've managed to kill one of the stock pups (broke a wire to the pup) with my clumsy surgical skills. It's probably not worth paying a professional to resurrect since I didn't love it in the first place, so I do need to replace.

Are all the after market pickups going to have the same dimensions as the MM? Are there pups that would be a step up (clarity/attack, etc) from the stock that will fit? I'd really rather not mess around with gouging a bigger hole. Do I have any alternatives at this point?

Thanks for your help!

Alrighty... I've figured it out, and in the spirit of community, I'll share:

Dimarzio Ultra Jazz fits a mid '90s MIJ Jazz bass w/o further routing. The bridge pup needs to be shoved in a little, but it fits.
