Mike Lull Tbird pickups - good for a P bass??

Is anybody able to offer a tone comparison between Lull's Tbird pickups and a standard Fender Precision pickup? I love the vintage Thunderbird tone but have in my head that they are overly dark - I'm hoping this is more a symptom of the Tbird's construction and woods.

I play fingerstyle through an Ashdown rig and go for a very trebly, overdriven sound. think Entwistle on Live at Leeds, or Wishbone Ash's Argus.

I have a 51 P bass that needs a new pickup and I would love to drop a Lull in there.

I was very interested in these pickups until I realized that they were $329 each with the mounting frames. Ouch!
