mim active dlx jazz5--pups vs preamp

Sign in to disble this ad
bought a used 2006 dlx mim jazz5 recently,
after set up it plays great, however has a clacky tone
& not very warm, awful for slap.

also the bridge pickup is microphonic & picks up a lot
of noise compared with neck which is silent.
fender 'noiseless' pickups. (stacked)

my desire is to replace the pickups first due to
microphonic issue. probably nord nj5f or maybe nj5fs.

my question is about the preamp. anyone have any
idea if the preamp is junk & contributing to the
lack of warmth?? or is it mostly the pickups.

if junky i'll then replace pups & control plate to
run passive for the time being........

wadya think

thanks in advance

FWIW:

there's been a number of posts on this lately (especially Vr's it seems) so a search would probably yield something of use.

Personally I like the preamp but slap for me is intertainment and that's about it. But that pre is over the top in top end and has ample low end and scooped is the standard slap tone so I'd speculate the pre would handle slap fine. I don't keep up with basses but I'm surprised there's no passive mode given the pups are passive. Actually I've had a few of them and I don't recall any with a by-pass switch. An oversite in my book but not an issue as I ran them outboard anyway.

Wasn't particularly fond of the Noiseless pups.

Aside from the fact you may not need to change the pre, I would change one at a time just so you know what difference each is making.
