I just got a '51 style P bass.
I absolutely love that bass-Much, much better than I would ever have expected.
I do use the tone knob. It is not on my mind much however.

For my own stuff, and general practice, my tone is generally wide open. If I'm looking to get close to someone else's tone, for a particular song, I'll start fiddling with knobs.

I'm getting ready to rewire mine master volume with series/parallel, pickup blend control, and either TBX or
a multi-cap switch on the tone control.
