Question New pickups for Warwick

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I'm new here, and hoping for a bit of advice. I'm thinking about replacing the MEC pickups on my Warwick Corvette Standard 5--love the sound of my bass, but I'm getting irritated, finally, after a couple of years, with the interference the MEC's tend to pick up. I've heard the way to go is either with the EMG or the Bartolini Js. Any Warwick Corvette players out there who've made the switch? How's it working out? Thanks, Matt

I'm wanting to get some new pups for my Fretless 'Vette. I was thinking Nordstrands, just to get a greater response with that 60's sort of vibe. I'd just like to add on to the thread and see if I can get some feedback on that as well.

Do you have the passive MEC pickups in your Corvette? I was wondering because if you do like the sound of the MECs, but do not like the noise that tends to go hand in hand with them, then maybe consider the MEC active pickups (I think they known as the MEC Gold pickups). I have these in my current Warwick and I really like the way they sound.

I did swap out my passive MEC equipped Corvette Standard with a complete EMG system (pickups and 3 band preamp) with great success. But nowadays you have such a massive variety of pickups to choose from. I would be curious to here how Nordstrand pickups work with the Corvette.

Actually, I had similar issues with a Thumb several years ago - picked up lots of RF. Took it to Mike Lull and he said it had a really poor shielding job - changing the pups\pre would give a different tone, but shielding would correct the interference issues I was dealing with. I actually went with Bartolini pups\pre and got a warmer and more versatile tone with adjustable gain on the pre-amp, which is nice. I still ultimately was not in love with the tone though and went back to Fender...

That's interesting. I'll check the shielding on mine. BTW, I still love my '76 Precision, just need more tonal range these days, and the Warwick does the trick. It's the closest I could find in an active bass to a Precision-type tone when needed.
