Noise problem with EMG 45JX
In the middle of a shielding job for TB'er Jamie Funk.
Part of the problem appears to be house wiring, but he has two EMG-equipped Yamahas. The one with a single 40DC is nearly dead silent in conditions that have the dual 45JX-equipped bass sizzling like mad in the upper mids.
The buzz is definitely RF-related, as screen changes on my computer and search activity on my iPad affects the level and tone of the high-ptiched sizzle.
I did a comprehensive foil job on the control cavity, around the battery wiring and the input jack area. I also grounded the strings. The bass is quieter, but still not EMG-quiet.
I can control the noise level to a degree by rotating the bass back and forth in front of the amp, just like a passive Fender.
I was thinking about shielding the pickup cavities, but I've never had to do that with EMG's before. Out of curiosity, I took a square of copper foil, grounded it to the bridge with a clip lead, and started moving it around over the front face of the bass.
Over the control area, no difference. Over the bridge pickup, no difference. Over the neck pickup? Boom, noise gone. I don't want to waste time shielding the pickup cavity, if the pickup is prone to noise pickup off the front face.
The two pickups sound identical otherwise- good strong levels, similar tonal balance, etc.
Has anyone experienced noise problems with the JX's, in particular with individual samples being noisier than others?
I'm going to contact EMG tomorrow, but just wondered if other people had similar experiences, or could suggest a reason.
