| noisy Ibanez Musician bass

I have an early 80s Ibanez Musician bass with the active electronics.
I'm not sure if these are single-coil pickups or humbuckers, but the
bass is noisy. I think it's cycle hum. When I put my hand on the jack
(the cable where it plugs into the bass I mean), the noise goes away.
I'm planning to grow a 3rd hand so I can keep it there all the time,
but in the meantime, does anybody have a workaround? My electronics
skillz are limited but I'm happy to expand them. I have a soldering
tool, for example, and possibly even a multimeter.
