Noisy pickups?

Sign in to disble this ad
Whats up guys - I have a Warwick rock bass, which as i understood it, is like the entry level warwick bass....and i believe it has the "EMG" pickups (i hope thats right) - the P/J style.

I just bought a new ampeg svt-cl head and the 810 cab to play it through....and i was playing last night with my band and im finding that this bass "clicks" alot...like when you tap the string agains the pickup....

I am a fingerstyle player, not a pick style, and i am really wondering is this is a technique issue, or a pickup issue? It is really only a problem when i have a lot of "attack" on the E string, generally during peddaling - and i was able to avoid it by really bending my wrist to where my fingers were almost pointing into the guitar, rather than more towards the floor, but this is not very comfortable...

So can this be fixed with better pickups or a better guitar, or do i need to work on my technique??

Thanks for your help!

When playing higher on your neck does the clicking or "String Clack" get worse? If so the raise your bridge saddles on those string so they do not hit the frets higher up on the neck. Also you might adjust your technic on how you are plucking the strings. I find plucking the string more on the top of the string causes this so I pluck in an upward motion which seems to have corrected this problem almost totally.

Just lower your P pickup on the E string and relax.

Thank you....This is my first bass, and I am still learning all the things i can adjust myself....and it appeared that this thing was never set up correctly...i lowered the P pickup, and it not only stopped the clicking, but seemed to improve the tone a little!

I still am having a problem with the frets clicking a lot with the strings, espically on the A and E strings from about the 7th fret and higher (higher meaning closer to the pickups, if thats the correct terminology...)

Sounds like your bass needs a good set up. Take it to a tech who knows what he's doing and have it set up properly. It shouldn't cost more than $60 (probably less). If it does, they're ripping you off.
