Noob question: how do you screw down jazz pickups?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an empty geddy body and some 75RI pickups that i'm going to drop in. the cavities will be shielded by dimarzio copper tape. i've never fitted jazz pickups before, so apart from the screws and springs, what do i need? i dont have the springs yet, so do i need a specific size? i've seen pictures of pickups with foam attacthed underneath, is this needed?

Hi,

I have hard foam underneath the pickups. They give you the uplift when you screw down the pickups. Works well for me - it's the standard on my jazz bass. I would not mess with springs. The more parts you have, the messier it gets

Regards,

Karol

The foam sits under the pickups to push them up, and the screws screw into the wood and hold the pickup down. You need four screws per pickup.

You should be able to find them in a music store, if not you can get them here:

Pickup Height Screws

They are the long black screws, 3029-B.

Just get any solid foam in a shape that fits your cavities. Make a small slice. You can use foam from any packaging. It should be firm but elastic enough to push your pickups away from the body a bit.

Thick weather stripping works fine, it’s cheap and the left over can be used to fix those drafty windows.

Thanks guys, i was originally going to drop an olp MM pickup in the bridge of this bass, but i'm going to try the standard jazz config for now as i've never owned a jazz before. anyway, i bought an olp pickup for the build and it has foam attached, so i'm just gonna steal that!
