Narrowed down to these two pups, mainly cos of quality/reputation (over 20years playing bass and first time I'm getting pickups!). Am I correct in thinking that in general Barts are more modern and HiFi and Nords more vintage in sound?

In general, yes. Depends on what you call "modern." Hi-fi usually means more highs. Some Barts also also very fat/warm, more so than with vintage style pickups.
