Lightbulb Nordstrand Big Single with NJ5 for a jazz bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Can it be done?

I'm looking at building a parts 5 string jazz bass...I would like for it to have Nordstrand big single in the bridge position and a standard fender jazz bass sized NJ5 pickup in the neck position...I would run them passive...

How would I wire them? What pots you recommend? What capacitor would I use?

Thank you!

you can wire them as a standard jazz bass, (250k ohms) Vol - Vol (or blend) - Tone w .47uf

I would run this question by Carey Nordstrand, the big single is going to have certain characteristics, it may not be the best bedmate with a narrow aperture single coil pickup. Personally I have a "parts bass" in the works that will utilize the big single format as well (Nordstrand)

There is a thread around here somewhere with a guy that routed his bass for a soapbar at the neck pick up. He was crazy about it, so it can be done. I personally prefer the soapbars as opposed to the standard size jazz pick up. If you get it done, please post some pics and or a clip.

It can be done and Maurilio (The fellow who just posted before you works at Nordstrand).

Nino has built at least 1 Valenti like that as well...It should in theory just give you a little more burpy edge.

Thank you for all the replies!

I've seen Valenti Basses with both big singles...but not like the setup I'm looking at...
Same with Nordstrand...Their "modern" Jazz bass sports dual big singles...in passive or active.

Basically what I'm looking for is a more aggressive "big pickup" tone in the bridge position (a la G&L)...and a mellower tone in the neck position (Just like a jazz bass).

In theory...it sounds possible...how would YOU wire it?
