So i would really love to have a second bass that i wouldn't mind taking out to gigs (other than my main bass, a new Lakland Skyline DJ) and i'm looking to drop some new pickups and hardware onto my squier VM jazz.

So has anyone tried these big singles out? I imagine they would give a nice ballsy and beefy tone, which is kind of what i'm looking for. Anyone have any idea how much it would cost to rout the pickup cavities?

a honest luthier would charge $40/50 to route the cavity, if he has the template.....

I had my Lakland 55-01 installed with Big Singles and I can tell you that the biggest improvement I noticed was the overall output. The tone was beefier and fuller but it lacked the brightness that a single coil jazz pup may have. That's fine with me because I also had an 18v system installed in my bass and an extra battery compartment added to the back so the on-board EQ helped me to adjust my tone adequately. All the work, including routing and installation ran just a tad over $400, but I had a little more done than what you're wanting so I'm sure your job would be quite a bit less. I was very pleased with the quality of my tone from that instrument and regret the moment I sold it even to this day.

thanks for the info. the cost of routing was what i was really worrying about. I mean they're only like 10 bucks more than nordy NJ4's so i figured i might as well go for that as long as the routing wouldn't be so ungodly expensive.

it's not a VM Jazz,, but it's a Squier Deluxe Active Jazz V that i routed myself,, the Big Singles sound Freakin' Awesome

go for it dude,, even if it costs a little extra to have someone rout it for you,,, you'll have a bass that's very unique & not just another run of the mill VM Jazz

They sound really great. Not a lot of snap compared to a lot of high end pups but the are really thick and powerful sounding. Shouldn't be too pricey to route.

That's my Cliff Bordwell custom bass. Played through a SWR rig.
