| | | | Nordstrand Big Singles impatience rant....
Sign in to disble this ad
HOPEFULLY my Nordy Big Singles arrive this week...They've taken like 3 weeks so I'm really feeling the impatience kicking in now. Getting them made into the EMG 45 shells to replace EMG HZ pups for a Six String Schecter Stiletto Custom. I chose these over an EMG 45P and 45J set. So I thought I'd make a pointless thread to vent my anger due to these things having not yet arrived.
So while we're on the subject of Nord Big Singles, anyone use these things? If so some opinions would be great.
Cheers. |

I'm going to get a set soon as well. I have Big Splits in one bass, but I want a set of Big Singles for another. I'll gladly wait. |

| | | | Wait time for the Big Singles was about 6 weeks when I ordered them from Best Bass Gear - for 6 string though, might take longer. And yes, worth the wait. |

I do have a bit more hum than I expected in certain situations (at my computer desk through a cheap mixer), but in other configs the hum isn't noticeable. Recently there was a 'Sadowsky Duel' youtube video with one of the recorded basses being equipped with these pickups, and the tone in that video is really close to the Peavy, so the tone is somewhat predictable. |

Thanks,
Carl | Yes sir. No extra routing required. If the install would have required more routing I wouldn't have done it.
The BS's are the same size. There is room for error if you don't carefully space the PU in the middle of the route.
When lining the PU's up I concentrated on the A & B string. I put them on 4+ times to make sure they were going to line up. As you can tell it paid off.
It looks like 1 upper hole on each PU would be the same as the BS's but it was just about 2 hole widths closer to the corner. No biggy. I stuffed that 1 hole with 2 toothpicks with NO GLUE just in case there was blow out when drilling the new hole, but there wasn't.
My action is low with a relatively straight neck 2-1.5/32". The G side of the PU is almost all the way down.
The bridge ground wire comes out of the body and down the PU route right where one hole needs to be drilled. So I had to kinda force it to the side to drill. The bridge ground wire has a very thick outer rubber so there's no issue with puncturing it.
I used a 2.4 volt drill/driver w/ brand new bits. The key is drilling slow and checking frequently. I would even tape the bits off so you don't poke thru the back of the body.
The mounting screw heads were very soft. I was using a brand new screw driver and I had one screw head strip, which became another project. So, use different screws. In my case I had some from SD left over that were the same size threads but a bigger more precise head.
I hope that helps.

Thanks a lot for the info! I'm definitely going to dive into this project.
BTW, do you have any sound clips or can you describe the tone?
Thanks a lot!

It's the SC sound and then some, but not stupid overly aggresive. Just right. Carey hit it out of the park with the BS's.
There's not one thing negative about the sound of BS's. It's really cool that BS's for 19mm spacing line up perfectly with Sheldon's 18mm fanned spacing. |
