Nordstrand big splits vs big singles

Sign in to disble this ad
Background info...

I have a custom fretless instrument, properly shielded, etc. Currently has Nordstrand Big Single pups and a Nordstrand pre amp. Some of the venues I play... small old bars in NYC... have really funky wiring, and the single coil buzz can be quite apparent. I'm thinking about changing to pups to their hum-bucker brothers... Big Splits. Hopefully to "tame" some of this buzz.

Anyone have any info, thoughts, advice? Similar tone? Good/Bad experiences? Thanks....

IME, the Big Splits are pretty similar to the Big Singles, and if you are having some single-coil buzz problems, then I'd say it's a good call. I have not swapped Big Splits for Big Singles in the same bass, but going by the sound of relatively similar basses which use both pickups, the Big Splits seem a tad more smooth (less growl) and maybe a little less air up top. YMMV, though.

I run Fat Stacks and love them. Never tried Big Singles but I would guess they sound similar. Nice thing is the ability to shut off the hum canceling coils if you want to. I usually run them in single coil mode and hardly ever have issues with hum.

+1

In general, split design pups tend to be a tiny little scooped in the high mids, that's why to our ears they sound smoother and cleaner, compare an equivalent sc pup….
I installed both pups in my Nordy, the main audible difference is in the slap sound, finger style they are pretty much the same in a mix...

Thank you for all the helpful info. Seems like Big Splits might be in store for this instrument. This Thursday I'll give the Singles one more try but if they don't behave themselves... Splits it is.
