Nordstrand Custom Sizes/Spacing?

Hi folks,

I'm a casual lurker and am wondering if anybody knows if Nordstrand (I see people address them/him as Carey, does he post here?) will do custom spacings/sizes for say their Big Singles or Big Splits?

I have a Cort B5 that I'd like to fit with Big Singles, which I'm pretty sure are set for 19mm spacings, but my bass is 16 or 16.5, also it seems as though the Big Singles themselvews may be a tad larger than the stock MK-1's, so long story short, will they do custom spacings? Will they do custom sizes on the casings themselves?

Please and thanks!

Good luck with that. I am still trying to find a way to get 12mm spacing done on a project bass and nobody seems to be able to do it.

So is that a definitive no?? You've asked Nordstrand?
Cus I've seen Warwick 5s fitted with Big Singles and I'm pretty sure Warwick 5s are 16.5mm spacing...

The answer is, "yes". Nordstrand will produce pickups with custom spacings. Last year I bought a set of Nordstrand Dual-Coils, with the polepieces custom-spaced for a Carvin LB75 (standard string spacing, not the wide string spacing), and they fit beautifully and sound great.

As for custom casing sizes, I couldn't say... :hmm:

P.S. Yes, Carey Nordstrand is an active member of TalkBass.

Thanks very much for the information!

Can someone provide me with an email address so I can contact him? Or should I go through their site business contact?

Never asked for them directly, but I did recently pick up a set of 17.5-spaced Big Splits in EMG40 shells, so I know that it's possible.

That's easy - blade pickups. Lots of manufacturers to choose from.

nordstrandguitars.com or any Nordstrand dealers.

No one makes aftermarket MK size, but the P2 fits just right with a little extra gap around it.
Do a search and you'll find threads from some guys who did that mod…

On 4 stringers you can easily use blade magnet pickups. On 5ers they could be split 3+2 so you could be out of luck and have some problem with the A string.

Also, the MK5 (or CBCMK-5 it might be called?), correct? I thought they were direct replacements for the mk-1 Barts or something? It'd be nice to have confirmation that there is some drop-ins Bart makes that won't leave any edge gap.

I still have hope for the Nordy's though, the B5 is a decent bass and I want to keep for nostalgic reasons, I'd really like to bring it life and I'm hoping some single coils (in a soapbar) will do the trick.

mk 108mmx34mm vs. p2 108mmx32mm

Thanks! Now I'm on the hunt for P2 sound files/videos...

maurilio 12-12-2012 11:06 AM

well, p2 is only a shape/size. What's inside is a total different matter…
Nordstrand can do all kind of custom coil configuration (to a certain extend).
