Nordstrand dual coils series or parallel?? Which is best?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a roscoe skb 3005 that has the stock bartonlini soapbar pickups in it and a demeter pre with mid switch. I'm thinking of installing some Nordstrand dual coils and I notice that those come in series or parallel configurations. I read that most people get them wired in parallel for the best sound. I want my pickups on 2 seperate 3-way switches for each pickup that allows me to go series, parallel, and single coil operation. Does it matter what dual coil I get if I wire it that way anyway? Also can anyone point me to a good diagram on how to wire each pickup with seperate 3-way switches in series/parallel and single coil operation?

This is what it says about these pickups here.

"In general, a pickup wired in series will have a fuller and fatter midrange with a subdued high end than a pickup wired in parallel, which will typically have more highs and a deeper low end with a cleaner midrange. Series pickups also have more output than parallel pickups. Parallel pickups generally are a better choice for a split-able installation as there will not be the gain loss associated with series style pickups. "

That's what the manufacturers side says, anyways. Hopefully Nino will chime in here at some point; I know that he's done alot of these before. However, I only know that because I covet them with an almost perverse desire.

I have the Parallel Dual Coils w/ 3way switch, love the way they sound. There is a little boost in outout between SC and Parallel , somewhat more between parallel and series.
I used the diagram on the Bart site to wire mine, I have a single 4PDT switch in mine that allows parallel/ SC/Series for both pickups, of course the draw back is I can't have different coil routing on seperate pickups. After I wired mine Cary put a diagram on his site, in the pickup discussion area.

Is the string spacing on the Roscoe compatible? Don't those have 18 mm bridge spacing? I think the Nordstrand is built for 19mm.

The only reason I bring it up is that I'm interested in dropping a pair in my Cort Elrick that has similar spacing.
