Nordstrand DualCoil: It's possible to install a selectable Paralel/Series switch?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have understood that in series, you get more output and strong mids, and in parallel has a voice more oriented like a "V" EQ..

The disadvantage of the series mode is that there is a gain loss when going from dual to single, allegedly this doesn't happen in parallel..

so it is possible to instal a switch that allows me to select my pickups in both Series and Parallel mode in order to get the best of both worlds?? or they are "doomed" for life to one of these options, from their manufacture? Thanks

You aren't doomed at all. As far as I understand, both the "series" and "parallel" versions of the DC pickups come with 4-conductor wiring, so you can connect them to a switch and use them any way you like.

The different versions refer to the internal wiring only, not the number of conductors or the options you can use. They are simply intended for one use or the other, but nothing prevents you from doing your own thing.

You're partway right, tubby.twins, all DCs can be hotwired to run in series or parallel.

However, from earlier Talkbass threads (and the Nordy forum), I seem to remember Mr. Nordstrand & co. do wind their pickups slightly differently for a specific voicing, probably to avoid the pickups from being too muddy (if you switch an otherwise parallel pickup into series) or from being too thin (by switching vice-versa).

Might be wrong, though, but there's a little voice nagging me from older threads that's the reason behind it. Might be too much caffeine, though.

Yep, IIRC, Nordstrand dual coils are sold in two flavors.
"Series," which are voiced for series operation, and "Parallel," which are voiced for parallel operation.
