Nordstrand going into EMG casing help decide the wind

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello Folks

I'm going to change the EMGs and the EMG pres in a bass that I acquired to do a very specific project.

I will leave the brand name out but give the specs.

Its a 5 string with the following

Alder body, flame maple top,
Maple neck with a rosewood board, (this neck might change in the future)
35" scale with 18 mm spacing

I'm going to put Nordstrands in a custom casing to replace the EMGs. I know I want single coils thats for sure, so that limits my options down to basically 3 different pickups.

I will be using a 2 band Nordstrand pre with passive option.
(Note I usually use maple/maple or graphite necks with NJ4s or 5s)

Big Singles
NJ5 60s wind
NJ5 70s wind

Based on the information what would you choose for your replacements.

(I'm leaning towards the Big Singles since I don't have a bass with them anymore but I'm not sold completely).

I went with Big Singles

Basewave,
I went with the Big Singles in my 5 string graphite necked bass with the active pre pulled out and replaced with passive VVT. I am thrilled with the results, I'm getting a very nice warm, articulate and growly tone. I thing the Big Singles will be a bit fuller sounding than the other choices with a little less high end, but plenty for me. I have a post with pictures of my bass in this thread Nordstrand big singles... experiences?

You've got the wide aperture, why not use it? Wide aperture singles can sound really killer ... big singles get the nod from me.

Yeah Todd...I miss the sound of my Big Singles (I had to many 4 strings at the time so I moved one).

However I'm pretty stoked to change the pickups on this one.

Pickles is correct I have aperture/space to do it so I'm going to go for it.

Cheers
