Do the Nordstrand Big Singles directly drop into the Lakland 4401? I see a lot of upgrades like this around Talkbass.

Thank you,
Dan C.

Why? When I talked to the folks at "Best Bass Gear", as well as an email from Kerry, they both indicated that the big-single had the best overall tone... The "Big Split" is more versatile, but doesn't have the *punch* of the big single...

They do, but they are a little bit shorter, leaving a 1/8" gap at the top and bottom. I put Nordy DCs in mine. They sound so good it is worth it.

I have another 44-01 with US barts in it, and while it sounds good, the one with the Nordys sounds way better.

@Dan C.
Thanks for starting this, I'm planning the same thing and I was too wondering if they'll fit in.

@Showdown
Are you referring to the 4 or 5 string Nordy DCs? The 5 string seems to fit almost right, but aren't the 4 strings going to be misaligned with the 5 polepieces?

Thanks all,
Adrian

I'm talking about the 4 string DC. They fit the route on the 44-01, but there is 1/8" gap on the top and bottom. The 5 string Nordy's would fit perfectly, but as you say the pole pieces wouldn't line up.

Aha, I see, thanks a bunch! And I suspect a new set of holes is in order, too, right?

Regards,
Adrian

Yes, you need new screw holes. And the Nordstrands have three instead of two like the MK-1.

The DCs would allow you to set up series/parrallel switches for each of the PUs as well as coil taps to switch to a "true" singlecoil setup. This is an AMAZINGLY diverse setup. I have the same concept in my Fender Roscoe Beck V.

That said, if you are not interested in the adding all the parts, switches and wiring, the Big Single may be a better choice for you. OF course, you will deal with the noise issues associated with single coils. That may or may not be concern for you.
