Is it just me or could that soldering have been done better?

Leave the soldering iron on for too long sooo close to the pickup to make a nice looking joint, you may damage the pickup.

That's a tough joint to make, soldering that copper braid to the copper tape. It would be difficult to get a really nice looking joint without putting a lot of heat on it. That said, it's not the prettiest looking joint, but as long as it works.....

I would make the copper braid soldering to the copper tape first, get it nice and solid, then tape the assembly to the polepieces
