Nordstrand MM preamp

Sign in to disble this ad
According to their website, Nordstrand has a new MM 2-band preamp. Just wondering how it compares to their standard 2-band preamp.

I'm pondering a custom build with a MM style pup, and researching the preamp world.

All comments-suggestions-thoughts-ideas very, very welcome.

I was very disappointed when I contacted Ernie Ball and they said I couldn't order a standalone 2 band EQ for my EBMM bass (that has a 3 band on it).

Maybe this is an option... Will take a look.

It's actually mentioned in the "What's New" section of the website... not yet in the official preamp section.

Another possible preamp is the SGD preamp. Anyone take this for a test drive yet?

If you are a DIY'er and comfortable with soldering I would just make one. I've made several and tweaked the components to my ears and they all sound great

It's a thought, but this possible build is one that I would commission out. Looking for tried and true, 100% rock solid, state-of-the-art components to spec to the builder.

the preamp that carey and sgd are offering is the same circuit as the 2 band pre that has been used with stingrays since the late 70's. id go with which ever one of those two is cheaper. i think i remember carey saying he was making the circuit in a smaller footprint.

All good info... Thanks. If anyone has actual experience with any of these preamps I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I built a bass for TB member Adam Wright (I think cleofungbassist). It has the MM preamp and an MM5.2. I think it nails the MM sound. It's KILLER.

if you have experience with a 2 band ray, you have experience with this pre. i had john kallas build me one and theres lots of guys in the homebrew mm pre thread that have built one using uncle fluffy's pcb's as well. carey uses all his own stuff but the sgd pre is using the uncle fluffy pcb.

If you are looking for the original 2-band MM preamp and have some soldering skills.

Do it yourself! Pretty simple circuit, and even better, Uncle Fluffy got some good PCBs made up so you only need to slot and solder the components!
