Nordstrand NJ4's in a MIM Deluxe Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok Guys, I'm ready to make a change. My Deluxe is just tame and smooth sounding. I love the feel and the look, so I decided to try different pick ups. I'm thinking NJ4. They get great reviews and fall in my price range. Do any of you have any other recomendations that I may have overlooked. I am looking for more of a vintage grindy jazz tone. more low mids and more attack.
Thanks,
Al

NJ4s are not very aggressive pickups.

Yep, the NJ4 is more a vintage tone pickup but very nice sounding. You can order them with a 70's wind (just ask) which is a little more aggressive. If you are looking for a vintage on steroids sound look at the Seymour Duncan "Hots".

Hey John, what is the difference-other than looks-between the Antiquity pickups, and Seymour's Vintage jazz pickups? Aren't they made of the same materials as say, the NJ4? Don't they all try to get basically a similar type of tone?

Thanks

They are quite a bit different. The regular Antiquity is closest but slightly more output and warmer to my ears. The Antiquity II is even a bit more output and more aggressive with a little less mids. They really sound a fair bit different than any of the standard Basslines stuff. The Antiquity II's would be the most suited for what you are after but will probably be similar to the Nordie NJ4 with 70's wind.

Dimarzio Model J's...are fuller and louder than the stock pickups. Those with Rotosound Stainless roundwounds will give you grind.
